Two Gentlemen of Verona is a story written by A. J. Cronin (1896 - 1974).
It is set in Verona in Italy, during the post World War era and tells the story of Lucia who is bed-ridden with tuberculosis of the spine and her two brothers - Nicola and Jacopo.
Since they lost their father during the World War, the two brothers do odd jobs to support their family, such as selling fruits, shining shoes and selling newspapers. With their meagre earnings, they also pay for their sister's treatment in the far-away hospital.
The author, during one of his visits to Verona, happen to see the boys selling strawberries and then later on doing different odd-jobs. He befriends them and comes to learn about Lucia and her condition.
