Answer:

Summary of the poem:

“In Morning Dew” is a poem written by Keki N Daruwalla taken from “The Scarecrow and the Ghost”. It was published in 2004. The poem is set in the world of nature and a beautiful expression of the morning. It shows the world through the eyes of a scarecrow. The poet has personified the scarecrow and tells us how it can see and observe everything happening around it.

The poet talks about how a scarecrow can see everything that happens around him in the morning. In the morning, the dew settles on the scarecrow’s hair and he looks neat and tidy. He has had a good night’s rest so now he is in a fitter state to keep a watch on the shouting monkeys and the porcupine. He can see everything except his shadow which changes its position all the time.

The scarecrow is very alert and keeps a watch on all the bird traffic. He is very busy the whole day. He sees everything but has some questions that bother him but he has no life and so he cannot ask. He knows about the seasons like summer and winter. He knows that he shivers in the cold and will fry in summer. But he cannot understand how these seasons come and go. He wonders why his head goes round and round in circles and seasons which also go round like oxen on a threshing floor. The poem concludes by saying that he also sees whatever is going around him but like humans, he hesitates to ask and grope into the things he cannot understand.

We humans too observe everything around us but we hesitate to question. It is a poem with a message that we should be alert and should keep observing our surroundings. It is very much important for us to have such an attitude of learning new things rather than hesitating to ask questions about things we don’t know.
