In the (n+l) rule, n stands for the principal quantum number of the shell in which the electron is located while l stands for the azimuthal quantum number which locates the sub-shell of the electron.

To understand the relative energies of two electrons, we add these two numbers and compare to find this out.

The standard values are for l;

s-orbital=0

p-orbital=1

d-orbital=2

f-orbital=3 and so on;

so if we take an electron in the 3s orbital it’s total will be 3+0=3
