As we see in the novel, hope sustains life. In spite of such adverse conditions in the annex, the people lived in the hope of a better life. Hitler was killing Jews and they had nowhere to go. Yet, Mr Frank took his family in hiding in the secret annex. He even invited some of his friends to live with them. Though food was scarce and they were living in confinement, the people helped each other. They tried to maintain a balanced life. Even Mr Frank's Ditch friends helped them with rations and other things. These people had the hope that one day the war will be over and they will be able to live in peace in their own country. They never thought that they will be killed one day. Their hope kept them going till the day they were arrested and taken away. Only Mr Frank survived the war.
