A compass, in its simplest form, is a magnet that is allowed to swivel from a fixed point in the middle of the apparatus.

Basic science tells us that a magnet is comprised of two poles and opposite ends of a magnet attract. This is the underlying principle of a compass.

A common question is which direction does a compass point and why.

The answer is if its working properly a compass always points to North. The magnet that a compass interacts with is the magnetic field of the Earth.

The “north” end of the magnetic needle will point towards the Earth’s “magnetic north”.

To keep confusion at a minimum we call it the magnetic north to coincide with the four cardinal directions that are used.

It’s also important to note that the Earth’s magnetic north is not actually at the North Pole, but somewhere in Canada and it actually moves slightly year to year.

Shylock was a Jew who practised usury, that is lending money at highly exaggerated interest rates to "get rich quick."

In many countries in Europe, Jews were already forbidden to own land, so quite naturally they turned to trade to earn their living instead. Then when they becane prosperous at that, both prejudice and jealousy over their newly found wealth ostracized them as a marginalized group even more.

Shylock is a good example of astereotype or stock character: he looks like and behaves as one would expect, according to the mold into which he has been cast.  A Jew is first and foremost penny-pinching, right? - and this is the primary trait which comes through in his character profile. There is little or no room left over for personalized expression, nor is there much surprise in store from him, either. The character of Shylock also serves as a foil for Portia since his vices put into value her virtues by contrast:
