In the picture ABCD is a rectangle. Pand Q are the midpoint of the sides AD and BC.If we put a dot inside the rectangle, then what in the probability that the dot is inside the shaded portion.​

Here, P and Q are midpoints  

Plot points(see file attached below)

Thus we can join them and state that the triangles on both sides of the line are equal ( because the base and height of both the triangles are same)!

so, the whole shaded figure is equal to the unshaded figure because:

Area of rectangle=breadth*height

Area= (1/2+b*h)+(1/2+b*h)

Area= 2(PCQ+PQF)

Area of rec= 2(area of shaded region).

Area of rec/2= area of shaded portion

unshaded region= area of shaded region.

NOW, Probability will be 1/2 because unshaded region= area of shaded region. So the chance of falling on unshaded and shaded region will be equal.

Even, probability= no of outcomes/ total no. of outcomes or events or chances.

There are two chances and one outcome so,

probability= 1/2.
