The racism , prejudice and envy in them made them unable to realize the reality that they are going to die out of cold if they didn't put their log into fire.

So they died out of cold within......that is due to the prejudices and envy.

The prejudice, discrimination, racism and envy play a big part in the poem Cold within. These qualities of character formed a barrier among them, due to which they even refused to help their own lives with foolishness. They had only one thing on their mind and that was not to help their fellow being, which made them not to think of themselves.

At last the poet tells that the main reason for their death was the Cold within and not the Cold without, the poet tries to explain the consequences they've got to themselves showing up thoughts ( prejudice, discrimination, racism, and envy ) which are not human friendly.
