In the poem “Snake”, the poet has conflicting emotions. On one hand, his education, natural instincts, social conventions and the urge to prove that he was brave forced him to kill the snake. Whereas on the other hand, the poet instinctively likes the snake, is fascinated by its magister grace and feels honoured to have him as a guest. He admired the graceful manner in which he drinks water.
He favours the idea of hitting the snake with a log of wood which he afterward regrets and claims as a wanton act.
