in the poem snake of literature, why did the poet throw a log of wood at the snake when it was just about to retreat into the dark hole??

The port was mesmerised by the snakes beauty and he thought snake as his guest so he did not want him to go and to stop him and spend some more time with him he threw the log or it may be due to the reason that the snake was golden and his voice of education told him that the snake was poisonous so mist be killed.
