The poet that is D.H.Lawrence says that he has something to expiate .

By this he means that he is full of remorse and has something to regret in his life.

He regrets his silly and wanton act of throwing a log of wood on the harmless snake that had just come to poets water trough to quench it's bursting thirst .

Thus he even blames his bookish knowledge and accursed human education that has told him to kill the venomous snake.

Also the poet says that he missed an opportunity to fascinate entertain and host the wonderful guest that had come to his place and the earth brown snake was a wonderful creation of the God

The poet says that he had something to expatiate because due to his knowledge, he was forced to stab the snake by throwing a log at it. The moment he killed the snake, an albatross was hung around his neck ie. he was very guilty for his action. This was the worst activity done by him in his life. He would always be bound with the regret of killing the innocent snake.Because he feels that he had done some mean act by trying to kill the snake. Because he feels that he had done some mean act by trying to kill the snake.he feels that he wants tomake amends to his meanness.
