After the poet throws the log at the snake, immense guilt sets it. He feels himself to be the ancient mariner and the snake to be the albatross. expatiate means to make amends. The poet wants to make amends for the wrong he did to the snake. He should'nt have thrown the log at the snake

The act of killing the snake according to the poet is a cowardly act. He wishes the snake would come back so that he could know and understand one of the'lords of the life. He is full of guilt. He wants to make amends for his action of throwing the log at the snake which he thinks he should not have done. He is filled with grief and remorse.
Hope this will help you ^_^
