Wordsworth tells us that the girl, who was lonely, sang a melancholy song while reaping the fields with her sickle. he says that her voice is as sweet as a nightingale and no one has sung to the weary travelers as sweetly as her. He assumes her song to be about old, unhappy things, of long ago battles, or of her today's problems, or something that causes worry, sorrow or pain.
