Answer:
In the poem 'Cold Within', written by James Patrick Kinney, each human possessed a stick of wood.
The condition they were in was very much cold. Cold wind was blowing and a dying fire was lit around which the six humans stood. Their only source of being saved was the dying fire.
The fire was dying. It could be kept alive by putting logs of wood in it. But it did not happen. If those people had given up their sticks(sins) to be consumed by the purifying fire, they surely would have made it out alive. But the sinners preferred to die, carrying their sins to the next world.
They died out of cold. Not what was outside, they died out of their cold hearts instead.
