In This reaction H₂ + Cl₂-->2HCl , the atom that undergoes oxidation is : Hydrogen .

Explanation:

Chemical reaction

When two or more substances react and form some new substance it is called as chemical reaction .

We see lot of different types of reaction occurring around us : Out of which redox reaction is one of it .

Redox reaction

The reaction in which oxidation and reduction both occur simultaneously .

Let us first learn about oxidation and reduction :

On the basis of classical concept

  • Oxidation : addition of oxygen  or removal of hydrogen

Mg+O₂-----MgO

NaH-----Na +H₂

  • Reduction : addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen

Na +H₂---------- NaH

MgO------ Mg+O₂

  • Oxidizing agent : which oxidizes other and itself gets reduced
  • Reducing agent : which reduces others and itself gets oxidized .

In the first example Na is reducing agent and in the second example Na is oxidizing agent

On the basis of electronic concept

  • Oxidation : which donate electrons
  • Reduction : which gains electrons
  • Oxidising agent : which oxidizes other and itself gets reduced

In this Mg+O₂-----MgO

Mg is reducing agent and O is oxidizing agent .

  • Reducing agent : which reduces others and itself gets oxidized

Redox reaction : when both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously

Cuo +H₂------Cu +H₂O

In this copper is getting oxidised and Hydrogen is getting reduced (based on electronic concept ).

In H₂ + Cl₂-->2HCl

Hydrogen is loosing electrons that means it is getting oxidised and  on the other side chlorine is accepting electron that means it is getting reduced .

In the reaction oxidation of sulphur is taking place.

•In the given reaction, valency of sulphur is -2, in the compound H2S.

•Valency of chlorine molecule is zero.

•When products are formed, sulphur is released as atom, where it's valency will be zero.

•Chlorine will form hydrochloric acid with hydrogen, with valency -1.

•Now, looking at change in number of electrons, sulphur loses electron, thus it is getting oxidized.

•Chlorine gains electron, thus it is reduced.

•Oxidation is loss of electron, while reduction is gain of electron.
