John is depicted as a hypocrite or someone who has double standards in the best seller. As John criticizes the best seller for portraying the low-status man loving the girl of high status. However, in his real life John, himself does the same thing by chasing the girl and convincing colonel Allyn to marry his daughter. Another instance which depicts his hypocrisy is when he states that one should be decent in his hometown and that people have permission to be indecent when they are outside the town.
