2 goats, 1 cat and 4 pair of pigeons. He was very attached to his animals and he was worried about their lives. He had no family in person so the animals were everything to him.

  • 4 pairs of pigeon
  • a cat
  • 2 goats

When the old man left his town which San Carlos he was sad not because he was going to die because of artillery but because he was worried about the safety of his animals. He knew that he had left the bird's cage unlocked so that the birds would fly to a safer place and a cat can look after itself and move to a safer place but the goat which was not as independent as cat and not free as birds as it was tied with a rope so it could not move to a safer place. The narrator compares himself to a goat like both of them were week and dependent on someone for their work and couldn't look after themselves and needed someone's help . So the old man was worried about the safety of the animals than the safety of himself .

Hope so it may help you
