13. (a) Both the batteries are in same direction , hence, combined potential of batteries is E = E₁ + E₂ = 6V + 9V = 15V [ E₁ = 6V, E₂ = 9V ]
use Ohm's law,
I = V/Req = 15/2 = 7.5A [ both the resistors are in series ]
so, reading of Ammeter is 7.5 A
Now, reading of voltmeter , V = ξ - ir₁ [ here r₁ = 1Ω, ξ = 6V]
V = 6 - 7.5 × 1 = -1.5V

(b) both the batteries are in opposite direction , hence , combined potential of batteries is E = 9V - 6V = 3V
so, I = V/Req = 3/2 = 1.5A
So, reading of Ammeter is 1.5 A
Now, reading of voltmeter ,V = ξ + ir₁
V = 6 + 1.5 × 1 = 7.5V

Or

Let i₁ current is passing through 3Ω resistor , i₂ current is passing through 6Ω
And I current is passing through big loop as shown in figure.

Req = 0.5Ω + 1.5Ω + 4.5Ω + 3 × 6/(6 + 3)Ω
Req = 6Ω + 2Ω = 8Ω

Now, I = (8 - 4)/8 = 1/2A
so, i₁ = i × 6/(3 + 6) = 1/2 × 2/3 = 1/3A
i₂ = I × 3/(3 + 6) = 1/6 A
