The Indian Tourism and Hospitality Industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth among the services sector in India. Tourism is also a potentially large employment generator and is expected to generate 13.45 million jobs across sub-segments such as Restaurants (10.49 million jobs), Hotels (2.3 million jobs) and Travel Agents/Tour Operators (0.66 million).

It is among the top 10 sectors in India to attract the highest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). During the period April 2000-March 2016, the hotel and tourism sector attracted around US$ 9.23 billion of FDI, according to the data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Tourism and Hospitality sector is regarded as a modern-day engine of growth and is one of the largest industries globally. This industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth among the services sector in India and has tremendous potential to change the landscape of Indian economy.

Tourism has emerged as a key driver for earning export revenues, generating employment and promoting economic diversification. Tourism nearly contributes to 6% of the world’s exports, 1 in 11 jobs and 9% of GDP (direct, indirect and induced impact). By 2025, the Tourism Sector shall contribute 10.5% to GDP, 10.7% to Employment and 4.9% to World’s Capital Investments.

Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from tourism, which grew by 9.5% in 2015 over 2014, jumped to 15% during 2016 for comparable periods (January-July period).
