Figure (i) has the correct path of rays, and the reasons are given below -

  • The path of ray for the figure first indicates that the light diverges from the path slightly, due to the refractive index of the prism. The speed of light in the prism changes therefore, the path changes.
  • The path of the ray will not change drastically which is indicated as in figures second and third. So these two paths are wrong.
  • For the figure fourth, the path or ray is seen unchanged, and this can not occur. Due to the change in the refractive index of the prism, the speed of light in the prism changes, hence the path change.
  • So out of all the paths, the first figure stands out correct.
