By rationalization,
we know ( 9 + 2√20 ) = 1 / ( 9 - 2√20)
So, we let y =  (9+2 \sqrt{20})^{ x^{2} - 24 }
Hence, we have :

y + 1/y = 18;
which after solving the quadratic gives y = ( 9 + 2√20 )
Therefore, by substituting the values, we have (x² - 24) = 1 or x=+5 or -5

There you go......
