In traffic signals Red colour light is used to stop vehicles because it has the highest wavelength in any visible mode and method of the spectrum.

In any case, in ancient days red color was seen as a color of danger, but now, it is used to hint at stopping traffic on roadways and also on railways.

This works under the principle that scattering of light is inversely proportional to the fourth power of its wavelength.
