BD = 8 centimetres.

Step-by-step explanation:

Refer attached figure.

Given:- In \triangle ABC,

AB=AC=17 cm

AD = 15 cm and CD = 4 cm.

To find:- BD = ?

Solution:-

In \triangle ABD, \angle ABD = 90\ degree

\therefore By Pythagoras theorem,

AB^{2}  = AD^{2} +BD^{2}

17^{2} = 15^{2} +BD^{2}

289=225+BD^{2}

\therefore BD^{2} =289-225

\therefore BD^{2} =64

\therefore BD=8\ cm      ------------------------(Taking root on both the sides)

Therefore BD = 8 centimetres.
