in triangle ABC, XY is parallel to BC and XY=1/2 BC.if the area of triangle AXY=10cm find the area of trepezium XYCB

Given that XY is parallel to BC and half of BC.

From this it follows that X and Y are mid points of AB and AC(BY midpoint theorem for triangles)

It follows that AXY and ABC are similar since all angles are congruent.

Since sides of AXY and ABC are in the ratio 1:2, we have areas will have be in the ratio 1:4.

Hence Area of triangle ABC = 4 times area of AXY = 40 sq cm.

Area of trapezium XYCB = Area of ABC - Area of AXY

= 40-10 = 30 sq cm.
