Correct Question :- In what ratio does the x axis divide the line segment joining the points (-4, -6) and (-1, 7) ?

Solution :-

Let us assume that, the line segment joining the points (-6,4) and (-1, 7) will be divided by the point on x axis in the ratio k : 1.

  • on x - axis, y - coordinate of every point is zero.

So, Let (x , 0) is the Points which divides.

Now , we have :-

  • x1 = (-4) , y1 = (-6)
  • x2 = (-1) , y2 = 7 .
  • m1 = k , m2 = 1
  • Joining points = (x, 0) .

So, using section formula now, we get,

→ 0 = (m1y2 + m2y1) / (m1 + m2)

→ 0 = (k * 7 + 1*(-6)) / (k + 1)

→ 7k - 6 = 0

→ 7k = 6

→ k = (6/7).

Therefore,

Required ratio = k : 1

→ Required ratio = 6/7 : 1

→ Required ratio = 6 : 7. (Ans.)
