Given : water be mixed with milk to gain 40% by selling the mixture at cost price

To Find : In what ratio must water be mixed with milk

Solution:

Let say water  = w   liter

milk = m  liter

Cost price  per liter = c

Cost price  = mc

Gain = 40%

Sell price = mc + (40/100)mc

= 1.4mc

Selling price  per liter = c

Total mixture = 1.4mc/c  = 1.4m

m + w = 1.4m

=> w  = 0.4m

=> 10w  = 4m

=> 5w = 2m

=> w/m = 2/5

=> w : m  =  2: 5

2:5 is the correct answer
