Roughage differ from concentrates with reference to cattle feed:

With reference to cattle feed, roughage differs from concentrates in the following aspects:

Crude fiber: Roughage contains more than 18%-20% crude fiber. Concentrates contain less than 18%-20% crude fiber

Total digestible nutrients (TDN): Roughage contains less than 60% TDN. Concentrates contain more than 60% TDN.

Nutritive value: Roughages have lower nutritive value due to low TDN. Concentrates have higher nutritive value due to nutrient concentration.

Bulkiness: Roughage due to high fibre content is highly bulky in nature compared to concentrate feeds. Concentrates due to less fibre content is non-bulky in nature.

Digestibility rate: Roughage due to high fibre content and bulky nature have low digestibility rate. Concentrate feeds due to less fibre content and non-bulky nature have high digestibility rate.

Classification: Roughages like oats, green maize etc are classified on the basis of digestible crude protein and moisture content. Concentrate feeds like oil seed cake, meat meal etc are classified based on the type of nutrient, i.e., protein or carbohydrate content.
