He was the quintessential Islamic despot. Tormenting Hindus, demolishing temples and building mosques, imprisoning his own father, killing his brother, banning music, etc. These are the stories we hear about pious Muslims of the Wahabi kind. So in a way he anticipated the arrival of Taliban and ISIS.

I don’t think he achieved much political or military victory. Shivaji used to torment him all the time.

I guess he is the real cause of the decline of the Mughal empire, although the full closure came with Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Aurangzeb was very different from all his past and even future Mughal rulers. All his Mughal ancestors were not very religious. All of them were secular, liberal and were consuming alcohol and other pleasures of life.

Most Mughal kings had Hindu wives. Even Aurangzeb had one Hindu wife but the difference was that while all his predecessors were Muslims none of them were Islamic. Aurangzeb was the only Islamic Ruler who ruled with the principals of closest to Sharia or Islamic rule book.

Aurangzeb abstained from drinking alcohol or any form of intoxicant. While most of the Mughal Rulers before and after were patrons of Arts. Aurangzeb did not encourage poetry, music or dance form.

Aurangzeb also led a very simple life. He did not enjoy a life of Emperor but led a rather simple life. His personal expenses were covered by his own stitching of caps and hand written Korans that were sold.
