Let’s talk similarities and differences.

The rook and bishop are similar in that they are both “long range” pieces. They’re capable of being highly effective as snipers from a distance. Both pieces operate more effectively in open positions, where they can flex their long range muscles. In closed positions, where center pawns are locked, they tend to lose some of their effectiveness (while knights tend to get stronger).

Rooks are capable of covering both light and dark squares. The bishop is limited to one color for the entire game. Bishops are often more potent when paired with the other bishop where they can rake across the chess board and cover both light and dark squares.

In general, rooks are more valuable. But in some positions, a bishop is equal or even superior.

Bishops, along with knights, are considered ‘minor’ pieces, while rooks and queens are your ‘major’ pieces
