Dalits are an Indian caste which are considered inferior on the basis of their social, political and economic standing. They were considered the "untouchable".  Mahatama Gandhi played a vital role in improving their status in the Indian society.

He took the following steps to improve their status:

(i) He eliminated untouchabilty by calling them "The Children of God, Harijan"

(ii) He said that their aims would not be fulfilled untouchability wasn't ended.

(iii) He allowed their entrance into temples and use public wells, roads, schools and other facilities through Satyagraha.

(iv) He worked with the Dalits to show that their job was a dignified one.

(v) He conducted campaigns to change the views of the people of the upper class related to the Dalits.
