In what way didi the feeling of franz and the villegers change ? What was responsible for this change

On realising that they were going to lose their mother tongue French, the villagers and Franz repented for their acts. Franz would never take M. Hamel seriously, he never wanted to learn French but on the last day, he listened to M Hamel and realised that French wasn't very difficult. It only required paying attention in the class and revising the lessons as his teacher always advised him to do. The villagers who would earlier get their children to do household work now felt that they should have allowed them to attend the classes of French. They attended the last lesson sitting on the last few benches, some even crying as they were never going to have another lesson in French, their rich legacy was going to be lost. Unfortunately, it was too little too late.
