Berman was a selfless old man who was blessed with a great generosity of spirit. He had the power of reaching the greatest heights for the sake of humanity and relieving others from their plight. A painter by profession, Berman wished to create the biggest master piece of his life, which he finally created by helping Johnsie. Johnsie had taken ill and was beginning to lose the will to live. Seeing all the leaves falling during the fall, she was getting filled with depression. Brave Berman resolved to end Johnsie's misery by setting off in the stormy rainstorm, only for painting a green leaf hanging from the tree's branch. This was his biggest masterpiece which was created by him at Sue's pleading. In order to help a stranger, he didn't hesitate to sacrifice his own life by succumbing to pneumonia. His masterpiece did have an impact for Johnsie's will to live resurfaced and she recovered.
