Main difference is that it was a Direct democracy.
Yes, many will say that not everyone was allowed to vote etc. Today it would be different, but still there is a major caveat.
The average IQ of a person being relatively low.
One may argue that the same applies for modern day parliamentarians congress members etc. :) I will not even try to rebuke the argument. :) But at least they all convinced others to vote for them. One way or another, that counts for something.

Greek city-states had various types of government: monarchy, oligarchy, and direct democracy. Over time, the male citizens of Athens gained the power to make political decisions. Athens is often called the birthplace ofdemocracy.
