Ever since the theft of his gold, Silas developed a habit of repeatedly opening the door, looking outside and then closing it again. He did this because he thought that somehow his money might be coming back to him, or that some trace, some news of it, might be on the road, and he could see or hear it by listening and straining very carefully. He did this mostly at night time. He looked out with yearning and unrest but saw no hope in getting back what he had lost.
