Spanish and French explorers were alike in that both groups came to the Americas in search of riches and glory. We can see evidence of this in some of the myths floating around at the time. The Spanish explored vast amounts of North and South America in search of the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. Silver and gold would become the basis of Spain's colonial economy and skyrocket Spain to the status of a great power in the sixteenth century. Similarly, French explorers came to the Americas in search of gold and silver, but ultimately became heavily involved in the fur trade. Establishing new trading posts was French explorers' highest priority.
