Roughage is hay, grass or often crop residues. Things that we or most other animals can't digest. Cattle and other ruminants are better able to extract nutrients from roughages because of their 4 compartment digestive system.


Concentrates are grains or other high energy products that accelerate growth, or milk production. These are used to supplement the roughage which makes up the largest part of their diet.
