Each presidency was under the charge of the governors. The governor General was the head of the administration. A new judicial system was established in 1772. The British laid down a sound system of administration in India. The Indian rulers had however, a centralised system of administration where the kings had all the powers of their respective kingdom. The armies of the rulers largely consisted of cavalry and were trained in conventional outdated warfare.

Indian ruler normally inherit the power on the basis of the monarchy dynasty or birth. The British administrator was appointed by the democratically elected government of Great Britain.
