In the Rigveda times there was no regular army. Most of the man took part in the war, whenever required. the later period, the king had vast armies of food coilders, chariots and elephants.

Answer:As we can see in Rigveda rajas or the leaders fought in battle with no regular army or trained persons. Most of the usual people participated in the battle or war. And as reward people used to get remaining wealth after leaders, chiefs and priests.

Where as in Mahajanapadas kings managed and trained armies regular salaries were made to them. So in this way the kings in mahajanapadas had vast armies of foot soldiers, chariots and elephants.
