Conduction, Convection and radiation are three modes of transfer of heat. Conduction can take place in any medium. However, a material medium is necessary. Convection can take place only through liquids and gases. Radiation is independent of the material. when we pick up a cup of hot coffee, heat is transferred from the cup to our hands. Since cup is solid there is no question of convection. But conduction is definitely possible.
