In simple terms, some toothpastes (not all) use very mild bases to help combat acid residue left by bacteria in the mouth. The human mouth is a dirty thing and we can’t kill every germ even if we tried. These germs react with the food in your mouth and create acids. Some foods are also naturally acidic. The toothpaste combats this acidity with a mild base. When an acid and a base reacts, you get water and salt. These are essentially pH neutral and cause no harm to the teeth.
