The groups of organisms, the cell walls form two thin overlapping shells which fit together are known as Dinoflagellates having a soapy box-like cell wall that is siliceous.
They constitute mostly the marine planktons but can also be found in freshwater at times.
There are more or less 1555 species of dinoflagellates that have been identified which are marine and around 200 which are found in fresh water.
