Sound needs the medium to travel.In every medium the speed of sound varies a lot. In air the speed of sound is 340 metres per second.

If we will pass the sound thru steel rod or in water or in water, the sound will reach the other side first in rod. The reason behind is

that solid have more particles and is packed but liquid is comparatively loosely packed and air is most loosely packed.

So, sound gets more molecules in solid and that is why it easily gets passed on with a faster rate while it takes time in liquid and gases.

And ur answer the speed of sound is lowest in gas.
