Tetrahedral geometry is found in [NiCl4](2-).

  • In all the complexes listed here the metal ions Ni(2+) has a 3d8 electronic configuration while Pd(2+) has a 4d8 electronic configuration.
  • The complex will be square planar if pairing of electrons take place for a d8 electronic configuration or else it will be tetrahedral.
  • All donor species can enable pairing in case of Pd(2+) since the energy gap is lower for 4d and 5d series.
  • In 3d series, CN- acts as a strong field donor species while Cl- acts as a weak field donor species, hence Cl- cannot enable pairing of electrons in case of  [NiCl4](2-).
  • Therefore  [NiCl4](2-) is tetrahedral while the other three complexes are square planar.
