Answer:

OsO₄ does not exhibit two different oxidation states.

Therefore, option (D) is correct.

Explanation:

A) C₃O₂ :-There are 3 carbon atoms which are sp hybridized.

Structure of  C₃O₂ shown as:  O=C=O=C=O

  • The central carbon atom has a zero oxidation state.
  • The oxidation state of a carbon atom linked with oxygen atoms is +2.
  • The oxidation state of oxygen is −2.

Therefore,  C₃O₂ has carbon in two different oxidation states.

B) Na₂S₄O₆:-

Here, sulphur is present in two different oxidation states. Two sulphur present in zero oxidation state while two sulphur present in +5 oxidation state.

C) CrO₅ :-

In CrO₅, one oxygen is present on -2 oxidation state while rest four are present in -1 oxidation state.

D) OsO₄ :-

The oxidation state of Osimum in OsO₄ is

x+ 4(-2)=0

x-8=0

x=+8

Therefore, Osmium present in +8 oxidation state while all the four oxygen are in -2 oxidation state.

Therefore, in OsO₄, both osmium and oxygen present in only one oxidation state.
