At the start of the Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned in the Agakhan Palace jail.

Gandhiji was arrested during the early morning hours of 09 August 1942, a day after the Quit India Movement began. He was released unconditionally from this jail a couple of years later at 8 am on 06 May 1944. The arrest was made under the Defense of India rules. This was his last prison term during his lifetime.
