• The first and the second cervical vertebrae are known as atlas and axis. The joint present between the atlas and the axis is a pivot joint.  

• When there is a dislocation of such joint, the dislocated part of the atlas hits the respiratory centre present in the medulla of the brain.  

• As a result the respiratory centre stops immediately. Due to this reason the patient dies of asphyxia.  

• This type of dislocation is commonly seen in the person who tried to do suicide by hanging.
