Let's first understand each phase of Mosquito lifecycle.
Egg - hatches when exposed to water
Larva - Also called as 'Wriggler' in water, goes through several molt step, and surface to breathe
Pupa - Also called as 'Tumbler', Does not feed
Adult - Body Hardens, flies short time after emerging
Your answer is mosquito requires most food in 'larva' stage. At this stage, larva lives in water from 7 to 14 days which depends on temperature of water. At this stage, larva feed on bacteria and decaying organic matter and most of the time on feeding. Larva feed through their mouth in which brushes that are located in front of the mouth, helps with the feeding by collecting the food. Larvae shed several layers of their outer skin called moulting. Due to this multiple moulting, it requires lots of food during this stage.
