Plans to establish an animal husbandry and livestock sciences university at Bikaner

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Cabinet on Wednesday approved the State’s first ever Forest Policy along with new policies on livestock development and water.

The policies would form the basis for sustained and systematic action on these fronts under the Rajiv Gandhi Missions functioning in the State, said Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who presided over the Cabinet meeting, thereafter.

The Cabinet meeting, first after the impressive performance of the ruling Congress in the recent Panchayati Raj elections, expressed satisfaction over the results and discussed strategies for the upcoming State Assembly session starting on February 22.

The Cabinet put off a decision on the report of the Commission set up to probe the police firing on farmers agitating for irrigation water in Gharsana-Roala towns in the first phase of the India Gandhi Canal. The firing had taken place during the previous regime.

Mr. Gehlot said the Centre has sanctioned Rs.797.7 crore as agriculture subsidy input to Rajasthan in response to the memorandum submitted to it by the State Government for assistance to the drought-affected villages. The amount is to be utilised in 27 districts to help small and farmers who will be provided with Rs.2000 each per hectare as subsidy for procuring seeds, fertilizers and other inputs.
