Through a series of Farman in 1651, 1656 and 1672, the British were exempted from custom duties in return for fixed sum of money to be paid by the East India Company to the Indian Authorities.
In the year 1717, the East India Company secured valuable privileges under a royal Farman by the Mughal Emperor Farrukh Siyar which granted the Company the freedom to export and import their goods in Bengal without paying taxes and also the right to issue passes or 'Dastaks' for free movement of goods.
