"An element in XML which does not have any content in it is called Empty. In order to indicate this element in XML the element can be indicated as such <element></element>

Another way to indicate an element which is empty is as follows

<element />

This is referred to as a self closing tab.

What must be remembered is that attributes can be present in Empty elements.
