Though Lushkov thought that it was Skvortsoy' cook who saved him, in my opinion, the credit for turning the life of Lushkov was of Skvortsoy.

There are three main reasons behind this opinion;

first, Skvortsoy stopped him from telling lies and begging,

second, he engendered in Lushkov the virtues of honest work by offering him jobs,

third, Lushkov' lies and stubbornness neither dispirited Skvortsoy nor unnerved him from doing that good work.
